25%
Recruit 6,500 new teachers in key subjects to set children up for life, work and the future, paid for by ending tax breaks for private schools.
The secondary and special school workforce grew by 2,346 FTE between 2023-24 and 2024-25 (approximately 36% of the 6,500 target). In 2025-26, over 26,600 new postgraduate trainee teachers were recruited, a 10% rise. Increases were seen in 16 of 18 secondary subjects, with computing (+44%) and physics (+36%) seeing the largest gains. The government says it is on track to deliver the full 6,500 by the end of this parliament, though further education workforce data is not yet available (expected May 2026).
